China Shipbuilding Replaces South Korea, Returns to World Leadership, Japan Supplies Its Own $100 Billion World's Largest Order
Last year, China overtook South Korea in shipbuilding and returned to the top position in the market, while Japan gradually declined. However, as the demand for clean energy such as natural gas continues to rise, Japan has also ushered in a new development opportunity and has ordered 100 billion yuan of its own supply.
Beating South Korea, China returns to top spot in shipbuilding
From January to May 2017, shipbuilders in China received a total of 1.75 million CGT orders. During this period, the orders of Korean companies reached 2.07 million CGT, accounting for about 30 percent of the global market. So far, South Korea has successfully surpassed China and occupied the first position in the world shipbuilding sector.
Today, the situation has changed, and China has beaten South Korea to regain the number one spot in the world. In 2020, China's share of the world shipbuilding market will reach 40%, while South Korea's market share will be 39% and Japan's share will only be 10%. Not only that, in this year, China also surpassed South Korea in terms of new orders, its global share reached 48.4%, South Korea's 41.4%, Japan ranked third, with a market share of 7%. It is not easy for China to achieve this achievement, previously South Korea was the world's leading country in ship manufacturing, as early as 2008, its market share reached 50.6%, which is difficult for other countries to compete. However, under the joint efforts of Chinese enterprises, by 2010, China ranked first in the world in terms of new order acquisition, although it has been surpassed by South Korea since then, but now it can return to the top, which is enough to prove its strength.
Japan is the world's largest supplier of $100 billion
At present, the proportion of Chinese and Korean companies in the global shipbuilding enterprises has reached about 80%, monopolizing the shipbuilding market, and Japan's performance is not outstanding, but it should be noted that it was once a major developing country in this field. In the 1980s, Japan accounted for nearly 50 percent of the world's shipping market, but it has fallen behind since 2000 with the rise of Chinese and Korean companies. Now Japan has decided to make billions of its own orders in an attempt to return to the top.
Nippon Mail took out 100 billion yen to buy 12 7,000 car LNG-powered ships from two shipbuilding companies in Japan, which is the largest order in the world at present, attracting wide attention from countries. What are the advantages of this type of powered carrier? Why did NYK order more than a dozen? Compared with traditional ships, this kind of transport ship can reduce carbon dioxide by 25% during the journey, which is conducive to protecting the global environment.
The manufacturing price of this high-performance transport ship is also about 20% higher than that of traditional ships, and Japan Postal Ship can reduce the price of a single ship through mass purchase. And as one of the world's major transport ship operators, Nippon Mail currently has 100 vehicle transport ships, of which only one is LNG powered ship, it is relatively short of this type of ship, and will be more limited in the future development process.
Although Japan has ushered in new opportunities, but there are also challenges in addition to the support of large orders, the current demand for LNG-powered ships in various countries has shown a straight upward trend, and the Japanese shipbuilding industry has ushered in new development opportunities. At present, the global environmental pollution is serious, countries around the world have joined the team of environmental protection, in this context, the status of clean energy continues to improve, the global natural gas is seriously in short supply, which also makes the demand for power boats rise, which is also a major reason for Japan Post to increase the order.
According to Japan Mail's development plan, the number of powered vessels within the company needs to reach 20 by the 2028 fiscal year, and by the 2025 fiscal year, its greenhouse gas emissions need to be half that of 2015, if it wants to achieve this goal, power boats become the key. Among them, whether the Japanese shipbuilding industry can return to the peak with this opportunity, it seems that it is still facing a big challenge. Japan at the peak of its development, the number of ships built can reach 20 million tons, but its achievements in recent years are not impressive, showing a downward trend. In 2020, the number of ships built by companies in Japan is 12.94 million tons, down 20% compared with 2019, and Japan's own manufacturing capacity is weak, the productivity level of ships is declining, and it is difficult to obtain new orders. At present, 27% of the ships in production worldwide are powered ships, and most of them are occupied by Chinese and Korean companies, leaving Japan with few development opportunities, so it will take some time for Japan to recover.
